Vicente Guallart is one of the most prolific architects in the world in the field of intelligent cities and urban regeneration. Guallart has been chief architect of Barcelona City Council during the period 2011-2015, with the responsibility of developing the strategic vision of the future of the city and its major development projects. It was also the first general director of Urban Habitat, a new department encompassing the areas of Environment, Infrastructures, Urban Planning, and Information Technologies. During this period of time the investment in urban projects was 1.500.000.000 Euros and more than 500 projects were developed. Most of theses projects were published in a book named Plans and Projects for Barcelona 2011-2015. He created the new Barcelona’s mantra that propose for 2050 to develop a “Self-sufficient city with productive neighbourhoods at human speed, inside a hyper connected and zero emission metropolis”.
During his term Barcelona was chosen European Capital of Innovation 2014-15, and was named the “most connected city in the world” (Fortune Magazine Aug 2015), or “Global Smart City 2015” (Juniper report). Besides the city won the Mayors Challenge organized by Bloomberg Philantrophies.
He designed an overall plan for Barcelona to become a self sufficient City by the end of 2050. Today he leads the architectural practice Guallart Architects, acting as international consultant on urban developments, new technologies and making advanced architectural projects. He is also director of Valldaura Labs - Project for the Self-sufficient City at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia. Previously he founded the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) where he led projects such as Media House project (with MIT's CBA), HyperCatalunya, or the Fab Lab House.
His professional office, Guallart Architects has developed projects such as the ports of Fugee and Keelung in Taiwan, the Sociopolis neighbourhood in Valencia or Gandia Sharing Blocks. He is the author of The Self Sufficient City (published in English, Spanish and Chinese), Geologics or the Dictionary of Advanced Architecture. His work has been exhibited at the Biennale of Venezia, MOMA or AIA in Washington. He has given lectures at universities around the world including MIT, GSD Harvard, UCLA, Columbia, Sci-Arch and University of Miami among others.
