What does “innovation in architecture and building” mean today? The transformation of production processes in fields relating to architecture - additive manufacturing, automation and robotics allow a glimpse into the potential applications and transfers in the construction industry. This in turn results in a parallel rediscovery of manual skill, craftsmanship and ancient construction systems in a high-tech and low-tech prospective of sustainability that hybridises at all levels, from the micro-urban environment to the building and materials component – and that innovates both in the field of new construction and that of re-use.
How can these opportunities for real innovation in processes and products be transferred, moving away from isolated experimentation, to qualify production and stimulate a productive system that has, historically, resisted change?
The increase in efficiency is going through a new integration between capital and work: the arrival of robotics presents an important stage in this sense and it becomes pivotal to glean the opportunities in building production.
Even though automation has not yet made its way into European construction, Thomas Bock, internationally acclaimed expert in this field, will highlight, using concrete case studies, how the experiences of Asian countries and the latest generation robots can make a profound change to the construction chain.

Arc transforms sustainability into a dynamic process, with a strong communication impact, aimed at continued improvement.

High production building is noted for its greater efficiency of site activity management. The first forays into deep retrofit have long been seen as low-density construction and relatively easy technical and management contexts. For years now, the challenge has been the application of construction manufacturing principles in high-density situations too, and in situations noted for their increased technical and management complexity. A planner and a small business making prefabricated solutions from Holland will show us, with data and real examples, their approach to the requalification of condominiums, capable of bringing the entire building to zero energy levels in a very short time, allowing the residents to continue using the space and with costs that provide an energy-saving payback.

In many contexts the demolition and reconstruction of obsolete buildings represents a desirable intervention perspective. Nevertheless, speed is of the essence when a new building replaces an old one, as is the price charged when deciding to go for a building replacement. Can new off-site production chains really offer a solution able to keep speed of execution, contained costs and project quality together? Italian workers will discuss this starting out from their concrete experiences in the field.

The industry is facing a period of radical innovations in these years, which will radically transform production processes with important effects on productivity and economic accounts. Industry 4.0 reduces the distance between the buildings and the rest of the manufacturing, while the themes of the circular economy and energy call for a new agenda for those who work in building and real estate.
